THROWBACK THURSDAY: ADAM BERNSTEIN x THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS - 'BIRDHOUSE IN YOUR SOUL' - TEXT LUKE BATHER
As every third article on BuzzFeed will tell you, the 90s were the best time to ever be alive in the history of everything. The platinum edition of the golden era. Take a hike, Roman Empire! Get outta here, Ming Dynasty! Hey, French Renaissance? Fuck you, buddy! etc etc etc.

No, but really. Some good stuff happened twenty-some years ago. Ask anyone who's been in the music business long enough and they’ll tell you so. It was a time of limitless possibility! Three filthy grunge rats from Seattle were the biggest band in the world. You could throw ungodly amounts of money at Guns n’ Roses and they’d just sit there presumably watching Axl Rose eat.
But perhaps most importantly (to some) - the 90s allowed two eccentric guys from Brooklyn to write the most beautiful song in the world about a nightlight and it would actually become kinda popular. Naturally they were able to accompany that song with a video so instantly ‘nineties’ (whatever that means) yet have it retain something that could only be conceived by minds like theirs, paired with long-time collaborator Adam Bernstein.
A museum-level tour of various lights paired with bizarre choreography, flannel shirts, painted city backdrops, grand architecture and expressionist flourishes - it’s Fritz Lang for the MTV generation.
Bernstein’s work here is the ultimate realisation of a visual identity he crafted with the band over seven music videos from ’86 - ’92. (Fun fact: Bernstein went on to direct episodes of Scrubs, Fargo, Breaking Bad and the criminally underrated HBO series Bored To Death. Wherein one such episode included references to this very song and video).
